Górale and their cultures form a distinct and recognizable part of the Polish identity. Over the centuries, they have been lauded in the Polish culture as the perfect example of what it means to be Polish. However, Górale are not monolithic as a group, and come into contact with many other ethnicities and cultures. In the context of their migrations from Poland to the Anglophone countries, they are usually known under the umbrella term “Highlanders” – an adaptation of the term used for the people of the Scottish Highlands, which somehow obscures the unique nature of the Polish Górale. The Góral Studies Center seeks to expand the knowledge about this uniqueness, to seek its expression in a unified set of terms, and to propagate it abroad.

The Góral Studies Center bases its activity on the work that has been performed at Ignatianum University in Cracow since 2018, and has been created on Feb 13^th, 2024, as part of the Institute of Modern Languages. The below are examples of the issues the Center is interested in. These issues are considered especially in relation to their expression in English and its popularization in the English-speaking contexts.

· Study of Górale identities and seeking the determination of the meaning of the terms “góral” and “góralka”

· Study of regional dialects (gwara) in relation to their possible translation into English

· Contrastive analysis of the cultures of the people of the mountains around the world, especially of the Polish Górale and the relevant groups in English-speaking countries and beyond

· Study of folk philosophy of the people of the Polish mountains, and popularizing it in English-speaking contexts

· Study of migrations and movements of the Górale groups, especially to/from English-speaking countries

· Study of influences of the Górale cultures on other cultures, especially Anglophone ones

· Study of the place of Górale among Polonia in English-speaking countries

· Seeking links between international cultures of people of the mountains

These goals drive and enable the following initiatives:

· Participation in world conferences, elevating the study of Górale to a recognizable brand in Anglophone academic contexts (especially migrations, linguistics and culture studies)

· Organization of guest lectures, panels, seminars, and other events devoted to the study of the cultures of the Górale and associated groups

· Cooperation with institutions of Art, culture and education, and the development of joint initiatives (e.g. publications, educational initiatives)

· Supervision of theses combining the study of English philology and the Górale cultures

· Cycle of roundtables on Polish Identities

· Guest lectures

· Book launches/debates

· Commemorative sessions/conferences

Górale i ich kultury stanowią odrębną i rozpoznawalną część polskiej tożsamości. W polskiej kulturze od dawna są prezentowani jako doskonały przykład tego, co znaczy być Polakiem. Górale nie są jednak grupą monolityczną i stykają się z wieloma innymi grupami etnicznymi i kulturowymi. W kontekście ich migracji z Polski do krajów anglojęzycznych określa się ich zwykle zbiorczym określeniem „Highlanders” – będącym adaptacją określenia używanego dla mieszkańców szkockich wyżyn, co w jakiś sposób przesłania wyjątkowość polskich Górali. Centrum Badań Góralskich stara się poszerzać wiedzę o tej wyjątkowości, szukać jej wyrażenia w jednolitym zestawie terminów i propagować ją za granicą.

Centrum Góral Studies opiera swoją działalność na pracach realizowanych od 2018 roku na Uniwersytecie Ignatianum w Krakowie, a powstało 13 lutego 2024 roku w ramach Instytutu Neofilologii. Poniżej można znaleźć przykładowe zagadnienia, które znajdują się w obszarze zainteresowania Centrum. Zagadnienia te rozpatrywane są zwłaszcza pod kątem ich wyrażania w języku angielskim i ich popularyzacji w kontekstach anglojęzycznych.

· Badanie tożsamości góralskich i poszukiwanie znaczenia terminów „góral” i “góralka”

· Badanie dialektów regionalnych (gwara) pod kątem ich możliwego tłumaczenia na język angielski

· Kontrastywna analiza kultur mieszkańców gór na całym świecie, zwłaszcza polskich Górali i odpowiednich grup w krajach anglojęzycznych i nie tylko

· Badanie filozofii ludowej mieszkańców polskich gór i jej popularyzacja w kontekstach anglojęzycznych

· Badanie migracji i przemieszczania się grup góralskich, zwłaszcza do/z krajów anglojęzycznych

· Badanie wpływów kultur góralskich na inne kultury, zwłaszcza anglojęzyczne

· Badanie miejsca Górali wśród Polonii w krajach anglojęzycznych

· Poszukiwanie powiązań pomiędzy kulturami mieszkańców gór różnych krajów i narodowości

Cele te znajdują odzwierciedlenie w następujących inicjatywach:

· Udział w konferencjach światowych, podnoszący badania nad Góralami do rangi rozpoznawalnej marki w anglojęzycznych kontekstach akademickich (zwłaszcza migracje, językoznawstwo i kulturoznawstwo)

· Organizacja wykładów gościnnych, paneli, seminariów i innych wydarzeń poświęconych badaniu kultury góralskiej i grup z nią związanych

· Współpraca z instytucjami sztuki, kultury i edukacji oraz rozwój wspólnych inicjatyw (m.in. publikacje, inicjatywy edukacyjne)

· Promowanie prac dyplomowych łączących studia z filologii angielskiej i kultury góralskiej

Działalność:

· Cykl debat na temat polskiej tożsamości

· Wykłady gościnne

· Promocje/debaty wokół książek

· Sesje/konferencje okolicznościowe
